What to Expect During Your Appointment

1

Check In

Use the check-in link sent to you via text to fill out your patient paperwork and consents PRIOR to the day of your appointment. Paperwork MUST be filled out at least 1 day before the appointment for our office to be able to process the paperwork.

Upon arrival to the clinic, check in via the Healow app or by text to indicate you have arrived. Then help yourself to coffee, tea, or water and a light snack while you wait in our cozy waiting room.

2

Consultation

Appointments happen with your clothes on in the comfort of the consultation room, in comfy chairs with a beverage of your choice.  Revolutionary, right? New patient appointments last 60-90 minutes where we will review your history, discuss your current concerns, and then review your plan of care options. Return patient appointments last 30-60 minutes and consist of an update of information as necessary, review of plan of care and symptoms, and revision of plan of care as necessary.

3

Review Options

We’ll take the time to go over all your options, review the most up-to-date evidence and pros and cons and work together through shared decision-making to find the best fit for you. This includes considering your personal needs, preferences, and any physical, emotional, or financial factors that are important to you.

4

Vitals & Exam

During all visits, a brief physical exam, including vital signs and an assessment of your concerns, is conducted in the consultation room. If a breast exam, pelvic exam, Pap smear, or procedure is necessary, we provide trauma-informed care in a separate, private exam room. You’ll be offered warm or room-temperature cloth gowns, robes, sheets, and blankets for added comfort on a cushioned exam table.

We use Nella KIND reusable speculums exclusively, designed for your comfort. They are temperature-neutral (no more cold metal speculums!), small as a tampon (no more pinching or pain), and completely quiet (no clicking sounds from disposable plastic speculums). Footrests or stirrups are available when needed, but many exams can be performed without them. Your safety, comfort, and well-being are our top priorities, and we strive to make every examination a calm, comfortable, and pain-free experience.

FAQs

Have questions about Gynecologic Care?
Tap to expand items
What is included in a routine annual exam?

A routine annual exam typically includes a physical examination to assess your overall health, a breast exam, and screenings such as a pelvic exam, Pap smears and/or HPV testing if indicated. We also address any concerns you may have about your reproductive or general health and provide patient education tailored to your needs.

How often should I have a Pap smear?

Pap smear guidelines depend on your age, medical history, and previous test results. Generally, women aged 21 to 29 should have a Pap smear every three years and women aged 30-65 should have a Pap smear with HPV testing every five years. During your visit, we will recommend the appropriate screening schedule for you based on your age and prior testing and results history.

What happens during an STI screening?

STI screening may involve a physical exam, urine sample, or swabs taken from the cervix or other areas, depending on the type of test. Blood tests may also be used for certain infections. We provide a safe, judgment-free space for these screenings and will discuss the results with you confidentially.

When should I schedule my first gynecological visit?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that individuals have their first gynecological visit between ages 13 and 15. This initial visit often focuses on education and establishing a relationship with your provider rather than an internal exam unless necessary.

Can I ask about birth control options during my visit?

Absolutely! We are here to discuss all aspects of your reproductive health, including birth control methods. We’ll help you find the option that best fits your lifestyle, health, and personal preferences.

Do I need to see a gynecologist if I’m not sexually active?

Yes, regular gynecological care is important even if you are not sexually active. These visits are an opportunity to monitor your reproductive health, screen for potential issues, and discuss preventive care.

What causes painful or heavy periods?

Painful or heavy periods can result from conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, hormonal changes, or other gynecologic issues. We perform a thorough evaluation to identify the underlying cause and offer treatments such as hormonal therapy or medications to alleviate symptoms and improve your quality of life. For cases requiring surgical intervention, we collaborate with trusted gynecologists to ensure you receive the most appropriate and comprehensive care.

What can cause irregular menstrual cycles?

Irregular cycles may be caused by a variety of issues including hormonal changes, pregnancy, thyroid disorders, stress, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), or other gynecologic or medical conditions. Our comprehensive approach allows us to identify the underlying cause and create a personalized treatment plan to help regulate your cycles effectively.

What is vulvodynia, and how is it treated?

Vulvodynia is chronic pain or discomfort in the vulvar area without an obvious cause. Treatment may involve a combination of topical therapies, pelvic floor physical therapy, counseling, or medications. We provide compassionate care to address this condition and improve your comfort.

How are vulvovaginal disorders and infections treated?

Vulvovaginal disorders, including yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis, are managed with targeted treatments based on the specific diagnosis. We use a thorough and personalized approach to address symptoms and prevent recurrence.

What can cause pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain can have many causes, such as endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic floor dysfunction, or infections. A detailed evaluation helps us determine the source of the pain, and we create a personalized treatment plan to address the issue and alleviate discomfort.

How is urinary incontinence treated?

Urinary incontinence may result from pelvic floor muscle weakness, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, weight gain, pregnancy, or other factors. Treatments can include vaginal estrogen and pelvic floor therapy. Referral to a urologist or uro-gynecologist may also be recommended. We work closely with you to find the most effective solution for your needs.

What are PMS and PMDD, and how are they managed?

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) includes a range of symptoms like mood swings, bloating, and fatigue, while premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a more severe form affecting daily life. Management may involve lifestyle changes, hormonal therapies, or medications tailored to your symptoms.

What is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and how is it treated?

PCOS is a hormonal condition that can cause irregular periods, weight gain, acne, or excessive hair growth. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and may include hormonal therapies, medications, and lifestyle modifications to improve overall health and reproductive function.
